White Balance Photoshop plug-in

Note: White Balance is also available in DaVinci™, our newest addition.

About

Unlike RAW shooters, JPEG shooters don't have the ability to change the white balance of the photo after it has been taken. This tool enables you to do just that.

Features

  • Live preview of the final image
  • Two modes of operation
    • Automatic - just click on the neutral area on the image
    • Manual - remove the color cast manually
  • Ability to save and load settings:
    • Take the photo of the gray (or white) card in the given lighting setup and save the preset. Take the photo of the subject in the same lighting and load the preset. You now have a perfectly color-balanced image.
  • Full featured demo available

Technical details

  • Product supports both 8 and 16 bit RGB images
  • Photoshop 6 and up or Elements required
  • PC version available

In action

Here's the shot taken in snow with the AUTO white balance. There are two things wrong with this image: it has a heavy blue color cast, and not from the sky - it was cloudy and it's underexposed - normal for the snow. When shooting in snow you have to add a exposure compensation of about 1 2/3 - 2 1/3 stops. The exposure is easily fixed, but white balance is not.

Let's start the White Balance plug-in:

All we have to do here is to click on the neutral color - in this case the snow. The difference is clearly obvious:

The blue color cast is gone, and the photo is the same brightness as the original:

To brighten it up a little, just invoke the Levels command:

And the result:

Let's see the original image again:

Example 2

This time the camera's white balance was left in SHADE mode from the previous shoot and the shot was taken in the low intensity incandescent light, rendering the shot orange:

Running the White Balance plug-in and clicking on the neutral color

Produces this:

And after a minor Levels adjustment:

A perfectly white balanced image.

Let's see the before and after shots side by side:
